I think my H.E.R.O.E.S might enjoy some of these links.
In this activity you are a peon trying to earn yourself a cubicle at a company. Complete each "task" correctly to receive a promotion!

H.E.R.O.E.S request videos
Miss Saarinen has made an effort to find music and videos to make her students enjoy math a little bit more.
All of these videos are found from searching the internet. Feel free to watch them again. Be sure to let Miss Saarinen know if you find a song or video that connects to what we're studying in math.
Enjoy!
Just remember since these are links from www.youtube.com you'll have to watch them some when you're not at school!

Integers, say what?
Miss Saarinen's marvelous H.E.R.O.E.S are working with integers during the month of December. We first learned what it takes to be an integer and are now beginning to learn the basic operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) with integers.
Here are some sites to explore and to give you some practice on using the integers.
http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_161_g_2_t_1.html - This shows the idea of using the 2-Color Chip Model for addition.
http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_162_g_2_t_1.html - This shows the idea of using the 2-Color Chip Model for subtraction.
http://www.basic-mathematics.com/adding-integers-game.html - Adding Integers against the clock. Choose your level of difficulty.

Blog Assignment #2

Blog Assignment #2 will focus on Writing Algebraic Expressions "Let statements" are required for this assignment!!
Due: December, Wednesday, December 9th
In your Literacy class you have been reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. You'll be viewing a few different versions of the movie that was made based on the story. Each year the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence puts on a production of A Christmas Carol.
Blog Assignment #2 asks for you to pretend that you are planning for a H.E.R.O.E.S team trip to see the production live at Trinity Rep.
An adult ticket to A Christmas Carol is $50.
A child ticket (2-14 years of age) to A Christmas Carol is $10.
1. Write an expression for the total ticket cost in dollars if A adults and
85 students attend the production.
2. Write an expression for the total ticket cost in dollars if 8 adults and
S students attend the production.
We almost forgot about transportation! If we were to need 2 buses to take us to Providence it would cost $750. The transportation cost will only be shared among the students since their ticket price is less than the adults.
3. Write an expression that represents the total cost for each student. (This means one expression that includes the price of the ticket to A Christmas Carol and his/her share of the cost of transportation.)
4. Now that you have your algebraic expressions, what will be the total cost for each student if 85 students go on the trip?
A gentle reminder:
Assignment - In your comment remember to include the following:
* your name (first name and last initial)
* your class
* the answer to the problem (# the expressions)
* an explanation that includes the strategy you used to solve.
* is there another way to solve the problem?
* any additional thoughts you have about the problem(s)
*** Please be sure to comment on Blog Assignment #2 so that your assignment is not lost on other posts! ***
Remember when you "publish the comment" it will not appear on the blog until Miss Saarinen has a chance to read it and approve it.

Comments have been posted!
Good Job H.E.R.O.E.S!!
We've completed the first blog assignment.
Comments that were submitted have now been posted.
http://heroesmath.blogspot.com/2009/11/blog-assignment-1.html
Click on the link above and then scroll down to see the comments.
We'll be discussing the answers and scoring some of them as a whole class and small groups next week.
The other part of each blog assignment will be to post a response to a student answer from blog assignment #1. Details to come on that. :-)

Blog Assignment #1
Here's the first assignment for my H.E.R.O.E.S! Miss Saarinen will introduce the assignment during class on Thursday, November 12th. You will receive a copy of this post along with a rubric of how you will be graded.
Often times in math, once you've solved the problem and have an answer, you move on without giving an explanation as to why your answer makes sense. Sometimes we get too caught up in just the numerical answer that we are looking for.
It's not very easy to show your work on the computer screen. So, when you are assigned a problem on the blog you'll have to be able to communicate your answer in words. You should include the math language and skills that we've been learning and practicing in class recently. As always see if you can make connections to other situations where the same math could be used.
Choose one of the following problems to solve and write an explanation for. This assignment is due no later than Tuesday, November 17th!
Problem 1
You count from 1 to 100 and you clap while saying the multiples of the number 3 and the numbers that are not multiples of three but have 3 as the last digit. How many times will you clap your hands?
OR
Problem 2
A doorman works according to the following schedule: he worlds for 4 consecutive days and has the fifth day off. Last Sunday he had the day off, and on Monday he started work according to his schedule. After how many days, including that Monday, will he have a day off on Sunday again?
Assignment - In your comment remember to include the following:
* your name (first name and last initial)
* your class
* the answer to the problem you solved.
* an explanation that includes the strategy you used to solve.
* is there another way to solve the problem?
* would you be willing to use the same strategy if the numbers were much larger?
* any additional thoughts you have about the problem(s)

Hip Hip Hooray!
I'm excited that her H.E.R.O.E.S are excited about the new math blog. I'm not going to post comments this time around since we're just getting started but will in the future. Remember to keep your comments appropriate if you want them to be posted online! :-)
A few students asked if I could put up some sites for cool games to play online. I spend a lot of time online looking for games and other resources that I think the H.E.R.O.E.S will like and I think I found a few more tonight.
http://www.classbrain.com/artgames/publish/arithmetiles_games.shtml (Helps practice basic operations. You're given a target answer. Choose 2 tiles that are adjacent (next to) each other that will give that answer when you add, subtract, multiply, or divide them!)
http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/games/numbercop/numbercop_hotmath.swf (Number Cop to the rescue here! That's right. Use the arrows on your keyboard to move across lanes of traffic to find multiples of numbers. You can choose which multiples you want to find or you can choose another option and play to find prime numbers!)
http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/games/factortris/factortris_hotmath_sound.swf (I loved playing tetris on the original Nintendo when I was a kid. Create rectangles with an area of the target number. Then place the rectangle in the grid. Your goal of course is to clear lines on the grid so that your screen doesn't fill up!)
http://www.coolmath.com/math-mind-readers/index.html (You think I'm smart... check out this crazy smiley face! She's wicked smart!! She'll read your mind if you follow the directions. Some of you may have seen a variation of this. Do you know how it works?)
If you have a chance to play one or more of them, then let me know by leaving a comment.
What game did you play?
Did you like it?
Did you play it for review or practice?
Oh... and the internet is HUGE... so if you come across a math resource that you think could help us, then let me know what it is and I'll take a look. Maybe even post it for all to see! :-)
Have a great weekend and I'll see you all on Monday!

Welcome to the H.E.R.O.E.S Marvelous Math Blog!

Miss Saarinen welcomes you to the
H.E.R.O.E.S Marvelous Math Blog!
Wondering who will be posting here? Wondering what you'll do here? Wondering when you'll be here? Wondering where you'll be when you post? Wondering why you're here?
You're in luck!! Miss Saarinen has the answers for you!
Who-- The marvelous 7th grade H.E.R.O.ES @ KMS!
What-- A way for us to communicate with one another about the mathematics that we are learning.
When-- Anytime Miss Saarinen asks you to! Just make sure that it's before the due date!
Where--Anywhere there's internet access!
Why-- (Because Miss Saarinen said so! Just joking!!)Hopefully you'll enjoy reading what other students are thinking in regards to the math we're learning.
